Meet Dumont Farms
What made you decide to become a farmer?
A series of events. Cute, and true story. My son was 9 and we were deciding on a once-a-month family day. My son decided he wanted to go to a live-stock auction. I didn't know what it was, and I wasn t interested, but needless to say, we went. He wanted to buy something with his own money, so we ended up with a few chickens and ducks, and one thing led to another. 13 years later and our farm has taken on a life of its own. As we raised our own food, we realized how different, and better it was. We wanted to share this with others. Today we have a 170 acre property, with 27 piglets, 175 layer hens, 12 ducks, 3 geese, 4 breeder pigs, 4 cows (at this time), 5 adult sheep, 3 lambs, and 1 horse...it's a full time job outside of a full time job.
What has been your greatest challenge?
It's a continual learning experience, you get attached to the livestock and you worry when someone gets sick. My wife is vegetarian, but she's actually a big help, and realizes that my perspective is genuine.
What has been your biggest reward?
We’ve been fortunate enough to help family and others by giving back to our community, and to provide fresh, wholesome food to those who desire it. Seeing my family being a part of this is wonderful. Our son wants to make a career out of it. He's studying sustainable agriculture at NH...this is all very rewarding!!
